How We Show Up Matters. Handling Public Criticism

Uncategorized May 01, 2025

When we engage in public discussions, we’re not just representing ourselves, we’re also shaping how others perceive our community and values.

While promoting an upcoming SpeedNetworking event on Facebook, I received some unexpected hostility. My initial reactions were predictable:

Defend myself in a public back-and-forth to "prove them wrong"

Assume two negative voices represented the entire area

Feel embarrassed by the public criticism - There are several likes!

Question what I had done wrong

But after stepping back, I reframed the situation:

✔️ Negative comments from strangers don’t define my experience or love for our area

✔️ Their reaction was more about their own frustrations than my post.

✔️ I had control over how I responded, and I made a choice not to escalate.

Instead of engaging in an unproductive exchange, I simply acknowledged the comment with a “like”, and moved on.
No defensiveness, no energy wasted. This approach sent a clear message: I hear you, but I won’t engage in negativity.

Here are a few lessons I was reminded of

🔹 Not every battle is worth fighting. Your energy is better spent on meaningful conversations.

🔹 Public perception matters. How you express your opinions and/or criticism reflects on your personal and professional brand.

🔹 Empathy goes a long way. People often react from their own struggles. We cannot judge others, we can however, choose how we respond.

When you show up online, or anywhere, you represent more than just yourself. Make sure your response aligns with the kind of leader, professional, and community member you want to be.

Keep putting yourself out there, and don't be discouraged by negative feedback, it's part of the process.
You're always free to decide WHAT you take on board and from WHO.
